Donations are essential to keep Write Out Loud going

Retirement Time Crush

(The challenge, set by Rasa Kabaila, was to write a poem with the word “crush” within it.  It was supposed to be a 10-line poem but I always write too much!)

Mention ‘retirement’ to the working poor,

And they will swear and go purple in the face!

"What lounging around watching day-time TV?"

I must tell them, sternly, this is not the case!

We are within a remorseless crusher

Between two lovely, nonogenarian mothers

And a darling cherub, who is growing wiser,

Whilst performing on a new stage every day!

Everyone knows we have our ‘retirement time.’

“Of course, you can do it!”      What can we say?

“Yes, we can help you, but it will be a crush!”

No wonder our brains are now going to mush.

Thanks Kj and Rasa., for your positive responses.
I wouldn't go so far as to say I wish I was working again, Kj. Definitely not!

I think your idea for poetic challenges is a great one, Rasa. Count me in! 😀
It would be fascinating to see what our poetic friends do with the same stimuli 😁

I often speak to retired people who tell me that they are busier now than during their working lives.
I'm wishing my life away, because I can't wait to retire.

I love this John! Hehe, it was actually a poetry competition that set the task of using the word 'crush' in a ten line poem. Perhaps we should all set each other different tasks like this from time to time to keep our creative juices flowing? A ten line poem with a different word that must be used? I think Stephen Gospage may be keen, as well as some of our other poet friends here!

Thanks Stephen 😀 No, you couldn't make it up, could you? Now I work harder. For zero pay
Poor me, poor me, pour me drink haha! 😂
(The old ones are the best. Or that's what I tell myself!)

Well done, John. A lovely piece of verse. Interesting that in retirement one builds a life that seems busier than the working one.
