Post War Bliss
Post War Bliss
We had gained a great vistory over an evil foe
and those who came home from war were glad to let go
They laid down their arms and put on civil clothing
and went in search of peace and an absence of loathing
Those warriors had defeated a fascist power
to now go in search of a good lawn mower
Those days of welcomed peace were almost beyond belief
as the nation celebrated to their great relief
Time moves forward to this new day
and methinks we have lost our way
The values of courage, perseverance and toil
have been replaced by sloth, indolence and the price of oil
We have dishonoured those who fought for our freedom
and now behave with careless abandon
Greed has consumed a once contented nation
to an indifferent society of no distinction
All in less than eighty years we have seen
the last of what now should have been
They gave their all for our today
and all we cry is for more money and pay

My main complaint is the mediocrity that has now become today's excellence. We praise the mundane and the not so good,
as if somehow it makes up for what we know we are failing to
achieve nowadays. But there is hope in the small courtesies
that can be met in our daily lives, even if they do not appear to
be practised or promoted by some - notably the politically
employed - in our public services. It's more of the "me...me"
standards that prevail for too many in those jobs...when they
should be about "you...you".- or at the very least - "us...us".
