What's happened to Christmas?
How have we gone on ths pagan bent
goodwill not exactly heaven sent,
rejoicing mainly for what we've spent?
Christmas began with a little child
born of a mother gentle and mild.
This we should celebrate and recall
not go beserk in some glitzy mall.
Only gifts in sign of love and respect
which greatly your purse need not affect.
That child who gave poor mortals hope
preached helping those who couldn't cope.
Don't allow marketing to make you bleed
Saint Nicholas assisted those in need.
In candled homes where wealth is seen
don't permit the barrage your hearts to screen.
Remember what Christmas should represent
and share the compassion once heaven sent.

Thanks to John C and Rose for the likes, and Uilleam for the comment. So glad to find that someone else thinks along these lines too! Am one of those weird people who love Christmas, though not deeply religious. I like decorating the house, cooking the traditional food, being with friends and family, and giving a few presents to close relatives. In Italy, where I live this commercialization of the festivity started much later than in Britain. Most people had a nativity scene in their homes, as well as a tree, or even without. It was more a family and joyously religious event. Not that awful 'only 50 shopping days to Xmas' pressure to spend spend spend!
