FIERY

Barely visible opal hills in heat haze

and shimmering surfaced streets.

Little dog invisibly belly-sprawled

on icy marble cupboard floor

in frantic search of coolth.

Balcony dwellers limply gasping

slightly straightening only

at sight of heavy watering-can.

But oleander and bougainvillea

evidently in their element

flaunting their lovely abundance.

Birds only heard in early morning freshness,

too scorching to even sing?

Elders tetchily trapped at home

crossly attempting to work out

incomprehensible manuals for their new A/C.

Exhausted tourists staggering zombie-like

with totally inadequate paper parasols,

peddler provided, to avoid complete collapse.

Has summer become a thing  of dread,

no longer a source of leisure, pleasure and delight?

We told you so, the weathermen proclaim,

but too few heeded when there was still time.

Thanks to Nigel, Uilleam, Stephen G, Holden , Trying Things, and K lynn for the likes. Lovely to hear from Ray and Stephen again. Hope you checked 'coolth' Ray! Had to look it up myself, I must admit! It's onomatopoeic and makes me think of melting icecream. You're right Stephen, think this awful heat will damage Mediterranean tourism a lot. If you are at the sea it's OK, as you can spend all the time in the water, but sightseeing is murder, heat stroke guaranteed. It's cooled down a little now, and is pleasant at night so one can sleep. Thanks again to all.

This scenario seems unreal as we look out of windows lashed by cold rain at the moment Jennifer. You have summed up the complete package here. Coolth I like!

I think you've summed it up, Jennifer. Southern Europe suddenly has less appeal when this sort of weather comes.
