BSA BANTAM

entry picture

I used to ride a Bantam

175 cc’s

I got it up to 40 once

With a tailwind breeze.

I bought it from a gypsy

Who kept its flaws well hid

I reckoned I’d a bargain though

It cost just 80 quid.

But soon I came to realise

His pocket I’d not picked

And anyway I’m guessing that

The bloody thing was nicked.

Its bigger brother, “Gold Star”

Made manly thumping sounds

The Bantam’s phut-phut-phut announced

A postie’s on his rounds.

Humiliation hounded me

Despite my classic gem

As Fizzy 50’s burned me off

With oiks bent over them.

More often though I’d be found

Making scuzzies smile

And jeering from the causeway

I pushed that bastard miles.

“’Ave ye tried to milk it?”

They’d scoff as we trudged by

Me and Beezer piss wet through

They sheltered in the dry.

In the end I flogged it to

A Beezer nut, I did

The best thing I can say for it –

I charged him 80 quid.

Thanks for your thoughts, Ray. After the Bantam I moved up to a Honda CJ250 which eventually came second in a clash with a Mazda car. In those days you were limited to 250cc’s until you passed your test which I never did. These days it’s much more complicated trying to understand what you can ride.
And thanks for the Likes, Jennifer, Holden and Stephen.

Brings back memories John. I had a 125 with a rubber horn. The girl petrol pump attendants used to squeeze it for a laugh. It took petroil I recall. I took it apart and put the float needle in upside down - hahha. I sold it to a draughtsman who painted it blue and christened it Til Eulenspiegel. Moved on to a velocette then a Triumph speed twin the police used them. I'll get my coat. Thanks for the memory!

Thankyou, Uilleam and MC. My abiding memory is being bitterly cold and wet. The tingling in my fingers ends would last until dinner time.

Never did get to that in between stage of riding a motor bike that
marked the progress from bicycle to car. I did get to sample the
passing excitement of "pillion passenger" on a family friend's
big bike...e.g. we passed most everything else on that 1950s country road! I like the rhythm of these lines. They go well with
the sound of a motor bike in my own mind. But I also have the
scene of the fate of T.E. Lawrence as depicted in the fine David
Lean "Lawrence of Arabia" and think I might have been lucky,
considering what could have been.

A Honda 50 and then a Honda 125 were the biggest I've ever ridden. I have to say I still miss the feeling of freedom even those gave me.
