“Getting old and 85 candles on my cake,”thoughts of an elderly gentleman

"I sit on my chair and develop a frown,

My age always goes up and never comes down.

Why am I getting older and wider,

Instead of getting older and wiser ?

Getting old can be very sad,

But the alternative can be really bad.

Age is an issue of mind over matter,

I f you don't mind,it really doesn't matter.

At 85 it's the oldest I have ever been,

11 years more to catch up with our Queen.

I live each day as if it were my last,

Because at my age,I might not last.

At 85 years I feel bereft,

Thankfully there aren't many left.

My knees ,my elbows and hips are beginning to click,

Deprived,I feel like a vintage car no longer in good nick.

It's my birthday, time to let my hair down, like many,

Oops!! I keep forgeting I don't have any.

Birthdays are good for you, this advice I do give,

The more you have of them, the longer you will live.

I love birthdays, lots of things to do,

On the other hand too many, can kill you.

Growing old I develop ache after ache,

In  a cost of living crisis,85 candles cost more than a cake."

I'm sure you have many years left, Hugh! A real gem of a poem, moving and funny at the same time.

Is this autobiographical or imagination in anticipation? Either
way, as I approach my 80th, I can smile at the familiarity of some
of the content!

A masterpiece of poetry in every sense of the word. I am ten years your junior and can well relate to all you portray.
Thank you for this,
Keith
