Them
With lives defined by favour and by grace,
And slotting without effort into place,
They float above the normal folk with ease,
Their major task to cultivate and please
Their backers and the sources of their cash,
To be indulged until their fortunes crash,
At which point their approach is to deny,
To obfuscate, if needed, downright lie,
To make sure they are shielded from all blame;
The one thing they do not possess is shame.
Their lives can seem exotic and exciting,
The prospect of their company inviting,
But try to muscle in and you will see,
They’ll have you for their breakfast, lunch and tea.

My thanks to Graham, Steve, Manish and MC.
This poem was in part inspired by a 2018 film entitled 'Loro' (Them) which depicts Silvio Berlusconi's clan of entitled hangers-on and the desperate (and forlorn) attempts of a small-time racketeer to enter this world.
Of course, it also speaks (as Steve points out) to inequality and the ability of the uber-privileged to maintain their position by pleasing their backers and, if necessary, by lying. It is not a poem about envy or resentment.
I understand your point, Graham. I have had the same feelings as well. Respect is a big part of it.
I tried to write it in a rhythmic and entertaining way.
Thanks to Frederick, Pete, K Lynn,Hélène and Tim.
