CHRISTMAS REGRETS

(My Christmas cracker)

My time here’s been quite a charmed one

As smooth a ride as it gets

Although I’ve not been an angel

Mostly I have few regrets.

But now as Christmas approaches

The season of warmth and good cheer

I find myself in reflection

On loved ones no longer here.

Perhaps you loved someone dearly

Or fought like cats in a sack

Perhaps there’s words that you owe them

But now you won’t get that chance back.

And when you open your presents

You may have a tear in your eye

Remembering those who were close once

Whose lives have now slipped you by.

Myself I think of my parents

Who’ve passed through life’s one-way door

And things that I might have told them

But sadly I can’t anymore.

Though neither were sentimental

“Don’t be silly” they’d say

So tell them now that you can, friends,

Tell them you love yours today.

So never hold back on those feelings

You’ll find the years have sped

Don’t wait until it’s too late friends

For things to be left unsaid.

Thankyou, Graham. As Marina Lewycka nearly says, “ We are all made of goo”.
And thanks for the Likes, Nigel and Holden,

Thankyou, Stephen and MC. My mam and dad were called Flora and Fred. At home, to personalise the song, I substitute “You’ll find the years have sped” in the final quatrain with “As I did for Flora and Fred”.

Good advice and a bit of a tear-jerker in its way, John. Thanks for this.
