SUTTEE
♡
Suttee, Sanskrit sati ("good woman" or "chaste wife") , a Hindu custom of a wife immolating herself on the funeral pyre of her dead husband. Suttee was sometimes committed voluntarily, but cases of compulsion, escape, and rescue are known. Scattered instances of it continue to occur, most notoriously in the case of Roop Kanwar, an 18-year-old widow who committed suttee in 1987.
............
Moths fly high
this cold delight
of a summer's night........
their wings sing
but my mind's not right.........
see the showers spark high
in the flaming air..........
sizzling on the water
blowing in her hair.......
and the women heap wood
on the fragrant pyre
and the moths and the flames
shoot higher and higher.........

There is every reason to despair of idiocy existing in certain aspects of human behaviour...mostly based in the desire to
impose control over the lives of others. This and the trait of Thuggee (spelling?) were taken on by the fashionably maligned
British Raj in its time, with notable success.
