THERE'S A TRAIN COMING

"That's not steam son it's just a cloud."

the boy had shouted "it's coming Dad!"

his eagerness held back like a signal.

"It won't be long," his father said,

"don't stand near the edge now mind "

(for flesh and bone's no match for metal)

"I can see it now under a bridge!"

and sure enough the smoke uncoiled

a face like a bullseye wreathed and proud,

the boy said "I can't hear it yet - "

"No it's coasting on the flat."

Just then a burst of rain made sleepers shine

the track like strings of silver

the distant loco gaining ground.

Then the mother's voice

"don't stand too close, it's wet and slippy!"

but neither heard as the engine ran past

the sky went dark as against the sky

the London - bound went hurtling by.

Thanks for the memory Martin. I used to love those corridors, full of potential intrigue and a must for any film noir fans . We had electric trains on the Southern region with them and i'd escape the compartment of my parents for sneaky long views!

Perhaps so, Ray. I can even remember taking a train to Preston with my mum when the carriages had the long side corridor with little cabins, as seen in 'A Hard Day's Night'. Fabulous days.

Thanks for sharing your period moment Martin. Magic was in the air if you were part of that and of course the smell ! We must be of similar vintage ....

I remember, as a boy, standing on the iron bridge over the railway line as a train would go rumbling by beneath me, causing the bridge to tremble. The steam would rise up in clouds, enveloping everything in impenetrable mist, and for half a minute or so all would be swirling confusion. Gradually, vision would clear and the world would return. It was so exhilarating!

Thanks for all the likes New Shoes, Stephen G, Stephen A. Aisha and Tim.

Yes Graham part of growing up in the halcyon days!

A very clear reminiscence Mark, and reminding me of my early visits to West Drayton on the same line indelibly marked for all time.

As a country lad in the Wiltshire of the 1950s. I lived near the
local GWR station of Box on the London-Bristol main line, spending many happy evenings on the down platform waiting
for the Bristol-bound express to thunder by, leaning in towards
my vantage point as it passed, leaving me in glorious clouds of
coal flavoured steam and a blur of dimly lit carriages. These
lines bring back those joyous times.

Oh for that face full of hot steam and smoke and the chance to put a penny on the line to make it twice the size!
