Wachefeld

Wachefeld

Let’s start at the beginning

In a land of ice and snow

Where a brave band of armoured warriors

Set sail with sword and bow

To forge a new life far way

And settle in a land

Where the gods had promised riches

For each and every man

We sailed the mighty North Sea

And  by the grace of Odin’s beard

Landed safe in England

Where our kinsmen were rightly feared

We travelled cross the Northland’s

And came to rest to plant our roots

In the vast expanse of Wachefeld

Where the sokemen nurtured shoots

Where the mighty oak and elm were felled

Our thirst for Anglo-Saxon blood was quelled

Under Ragnar Lodbrok  -  Danelaw was upheld

In the streets and lanes of Wachefeld

In the wapentake of Agbrigg

To help us travel and navigate

We built three roads around the church

Westgate, Northgate and Kirkgate

We traversed the river Calder

And increased our strength and trade

Settling the verdant lands

Our ancestors once did raid

Where the mighty oak and elm were felled

Our thirst for Anglo-Saxon blood was quelled

Under Ragnar Lodbrok - Danelaw was upheld

In the streets and lanes of Wachefeld

I am a proud tall Northman

And my blood is that of Danes

And the grey waters of the Calder

Flows within my veins

When my time is come and over

And my spirit longs to roam

Bury my bones in Wachefeld

The place that I called home

Where the mighty oak and elm were felled

Our thirst for Anglo-Saxon blood was quelled

Under Ragnar Lodbrok - Danelaw was upheld

In the streets and lanes of Wachefeld
