Lady of the Night (Out of Need)

Lady of the Night. ( Out of need)

It's 4:00 in the morning and it's pouring down again.

The rain is lashing against my misty window panes.

I can see halfway down the road under the streetlight.

There stands Mary, one of the ladies of the night.

Five nights a week Mary will be there, come rain or shine.

Just trying to survive not really committing any crime.

Mary has a daughter she has left with a neighbour safely indoors.

Yet Mary herself when on the street is never safe and secure.

Every night she rolls the dice and risks being abused.

To make some old man happy in her high heeled shoes.

As ladies of the night go, Mary is reasonably cheap.

This keeps the old men curb crawling all the way up the street.

With every new customer another piece of her is taken by a man.

She is risking everything and putting her life in their hands.

All this just to earn a few pounds on the side.

To be able to pay some bills and feed and clothe her child.

Put yourself in Mary's shoes, go on give it a try.

How far would you go and what would you do to try and survive.

Next time you see Mary and you wish her ill feeling.

Remember she's doing her best and she is still a human being.

The oldest profession in history has always lived on by another name, survival.
