Give Her Back: A Sonnet For Liberty

entry picture

To Glucksmann, this no longer fits with Trump’s current policies. The U.S. president is taking harsh action against immigrants, among other things. Since his inauguration on January 20, thousands of migrants have been arrested and deported to their countries of origin. The U.S. rapprochement with Russia in the context of the war in Ukraine is also likely part of the background to Glucksmann’s demand. As the lead candidate of the Socialists in the last European election, he is known as a strong supporter of Ukraine and a staunch critic of the U.S. president’s course.

You took her torch, a gift across the sea,
A symbol wrought of hope and burning light,
To greet the weary souls who would be free,
And pierce the dark with dreams that banish night.

But now she stands in shadows cast by fear,
While gates once open close with iron hands;
The cries of exiled hearts you will not hear,
As tyrants' tempests sweep across your lands.

We gave her as you sought the freedom flame,
When freedom's spark was fragile in the storm—
But if you scorn her truth and stain her name,
Return her to the land where she was born.

For liberty lives not in stone or brass,
But in the hearts of those who let her pass.
