The Measure of a Person

Some people accumulate alot of wealth and let their crumbs fall to those at the bottom of the pile.

Some people scrape together what they can and shake their heads in lost confusion.

Who has more worth:

the person who shares their last piece of bread with their neighbor,

or the person who eats until their belly is full with not a glance towards their neighbor?

Share what you have and feel the freedom of grasping nothing.

You will soar as a bird to the heights of joy when you clasp the outstretched hand of the person with nothing.

But together we'll grow crops again.

And farm our lands togethermore.

And then prepare the meals we share.

Now with a touch of 'happy yore'

With a small hint of extra;

And a life that we adore.

Hélène,
The themes in your poem remind me of the Good Samaritan parable, where true worth is shown through selfless acts of kindness, not wealth, and the Ant and the Grasshopper fable, which emphasises the importance of helping others and sharing what we have. Like these stories, your poem beautifully captures the idea that joy and freedom come from generosity and compassion, not accumulation.
Regards,
Rolph
