My Daddy Never Loved Me

entry picture

My daddy never loved me
He couldn't say the word
All I wanted was attention
But my voice was never heard
My daddy never loved me

My daddy never loved me
All I wanted was praise
I can still remember the feeling
Even after a lifetime of haze
My daddy never loved me

My daddy never loved me
I tried to make him proud
His generation were a different breed
I was always under a sad cloud
My daddy never loved me

My daddy never loved me
I did my best to achieve and excell
Made my way and travelled the world
Impressed maybe I could never tell
My daddy never loved me

My daddy never loved me
He kept his feelings deep inside
How I craved a little recognition
He stood tall and had his pride
My daddy never loved me

My daddy never loved me
The gift of life me he gave
I am just left bereft and empty
As he took his heart to the grave
My daddy never loved me

A sad, heartfelt poem, Tom. Everyone shows love in different ways. My dad was not very demonstrative but he showed his love by making so many sacrifices for my brother and I - taking us to museums, cricket matches, which I'm sure he could barely afford.

Dear Tom,

Your words cut deep, I know them well,
A story my own heart could tell.
A father's love, so tightly sealed,
A wound that never quite gets healed.

They lived in times both hard and proud,
Where feelings stayed behind a cloud.
To show their hearts, to speak their soul,
Was seen as weakness, not a goal.

My father too, wore such a mask,
To reach for love, a hopeless task.
He never knew his mother’s hand,
His father, stern and hard to stand.

And so, the cycle traveled on,
A hidden love, a quiet song.
Yet deep inside, I know it’s true,
There was a love he never knew... how to pursue.

Your poem gave that silence voice,
The pain, the longing, and the choice—
To still achieve, to live, to try,
While carrying that question: why?

Thank you, Tom, for being brave,
For giving voice to what we crave.
Your words remind us we’re not alone—
In silent love that went unknown.

With deep respect,
Rolph

Thanks, Tom.
I can't remember my dad ever putting his arms around me, or demonstrating any kind of affection, perhaps it was just a sign of the times.
At any rate, I think it's time we blokes ditched the big strong silent and strong image. It's a right load of cobblers - the world is running short of love.
I remember a couple of years ago in the pub, a chap saying "see you later, love", to his son...long may it be so.
