dark blow and their cartoon legs
kick beat when they march

Thing is though, Isobel, you "explain" for one and you do so for all. Then you miss out on all the weird and wonderful "explanations" that others come up with and that make your poems so much more interesting than they really are.Happy New Year!
Oh dear - and my new year's resolution is not to comment on poetry I don't understand...
Thanks, Steve and Greg. End of empire-ish.
Jingoism, football hooligans, end of empire? David Cameron's EU veto? I enjoyed the cartoon image.
Isobel. One of my New Year resolutions is not to explain poems. I've already lapsed on the lager and Viagra. I can't let that one go. But see how it's shaped like a cartoon cliff.
I don't get this at all Ray - I especially don't get 'and the sky dark blow'.
You will no doubt explain it to me at some point :)

Meant to comment on this at the time and got distracted.
This is an unusual one for you Ray, and I find it really intriguing. I love the structure of it - it's like you're breaking all your own usual rules.
