The Woman in the Corner Shop

The Woman at the Corner Shop

The woman at the corner shop

By name of Bella Blenkinsop -

A stout and sturdy woman, who

Sold Pegrams tea and dolly blue -

And firelighters and penny chews

And copies of the Evening News

And Woodbines, packs of five, and Twink

Home perms, to make the men-folk wink

In short, she sold most everything

From a mop to a brass curtain ring -

And if your Dad was off work, sick,

You'd take "the book"; get it on tick

But woe betide if one day you

Forgot to say "please", or "thank you" -

For then big Bella Blenkinsop

Would fold her meaty arms, and stop

Whatever she was doing - oh" -

The look you got made your face glow! -

And nevermore would you commit

The crime of rudeness, not one bit!

If you WERE rude again, oh dear! -

You'd get a clip around the ear -

And, consequently, us kids knew

That we must watch each 'p' and 'q'!

Oh! - Bella Blenkinsop! - your day

Is long-gone - but I have to say

I smile, dear Bella Blenkinsop,

When I recall your corner shop.....

I remember those days. They would greet everyone by name at our corner shop. I could buy a great mix of sweets for one old penny. Take care, Tony.

A rewarding glimpse through the kehole of the past Dorinda. (Not too far either - I well remember dolly-blue!) Supermarkets just don't have the character of their more intimate predecessors do they? Well done.

Regards,
A.E.

I was delighted to read your comments about BB's corner shop! - and consequently very much encouraged to keep my pencil scribbling! (No, Bella Blenkinsop wasn't her 'real'name: our corner shop lady we called Auntie May - she must have been Auntie May to half the kids in the neighbourhood!) Thanks to you all!....D.

What an enjoyable Poem to read (was it real)..Dorinda.?
We used to call our shop 'Harry's' cos that's what was written on it!.. on our Council estate, he was literally 'Open All Hours' a saviour.. a bit like Mr Arkwright on TV.. he sold everything you would ever run out of when you didn't want to run out of it...but sure as eggs he'd have it..from fresh eggs to paraffin for those (pre-central heating) heaters! and small pack of 1st Aid Plasters and needle and cotton to fresh bread and choc biscuits...'a bloody marvellous shop in those days! Thanks Dorinda for a lovely memory of yester year.

Oh this takes me back to those days when such shops existed, not the impersonal, amorphous pantechnicons of hyper-consumerism we suffer now.

Firelighters, penny chews and Woodbines ... what wonderful mementos of a long-but-not-forgotten past of several lifetimes ago.

I'm sure I went to school with a Bella Blenkinsop ... I wonder if it's the same one :)

Lovely poem Dorinda,

reminds me in a way
of the time I used to have to take
my Dad,s best shoes to the pawnbroker's
in order to get money for food

in the meantime,Dad had to make do
with wearing his turned down wellies!

best regards
Patricia and Stefan.

A delightful trip down the memory lane that saw
the sort of corner shop run by BB.
