Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks

Mother of the Modern Day Civil Rights Movement

Your purpose settled deep within your skin

When innate courage mirrored glowing coal

Determination, all were found within

You Rosa, kindled fire in your soul

When weary legs could bear you to your seat

And having sat they could not bear to stand

Since standing meant submit to slow defeat

Forgoing principle for lame demand

Arrested, charged and jailed, you broke the law

But stood your ground, the senate heard your plea

While Martin Luthor spoke for what he saw

Supporters gathered strength, they set you free

When segregation tainted your homeland

You Kept your seat, and freedom took the stand.

Hi Carol, great words and a fitting tribute to a brave lady, hard to believe it wasn't that long ago in the realms of time. We've come a long way, and improved as a world but I doubt the job will ever be completed, best wishes Jeff

Hi Steve,
Interesting question. I like to think I would have spoken out for Rosa, but suspect I may have sat quietly. You have to be there to know.
I believe things have changed for the better and bigotry is not tolerated in the same way now. I suspect if it weren't for people like Rosa then Obama would not be where he is today. I have my fingers crossed for him for Tuesday.

i have read of Rosa before Carol, and appreciate your poem on the basis of you bringing attention via verse to that moment in time - sorted : )

I have thought of what I would have done if I'd been on that bus... what would you have done?
