Devotion

So many years we’ve been together now,

There never was another one for me.

Beneath bright stars, your key set my heart free,

To love you always was my whispered vow.

Aged just eighteen we had a lot to learn,

We learnt together, made mistakes and how,

Our love survived and flourished so we now

Find blissful heights as passion lasts to burn.

A sweet contentment comes whenever I

Lie at your side in knowledge that just you

Fulfil me yet remain my best friend too,

And hear returning pleasure in your sigh.

We married young; they said we’d never last,

We’re in for the duration, holding fast.

I have just tweaked out "doth" and "eternally", but decided to keep "blissful".

Thank you Harry, I too hoped certain words may work in a sonnet but I may tweak it a little. :)

John, thank you but I'm still waiting for anything to come out of his pocket!! :)

Nice one Lynn.
I suspect this means he's got to put his hand in his pocket now!
Good luck.

Good go at a sonnet Lynne...and nice couple of summing lines.

Cynthisa right about the archaisms (but somehow they don`t seem to matter so much in a sonnet)

Thank you Yvonne and Cynthia.

I did worry that the problem with writing an autobiographical love poem after being married so long would make it cheesy. Only my second sonnet - it might be the last too, haha. xx

An admirable sonnet on a bracing theme. I did smile at 'doth', and maybe a bit with 'Eternally' and 'blissful' but your effect is still one of personal honesty and encouragement for us all.
