Live And Let Live?

This poem won me Letter of the Week in our local paper.  I don't expect it to bring me popularity in all circles, however!

What with pollution and the price of fuel,

Cycling should be a good thing.

But do I want them on our towpaths?

Well, not with the trouble they bring.

I remember when my son was twelve,

We each jumped ashore with a rope,

Then as we tried to pull our boat in,

The reaction was not what you’d hope.

“Thank you!” said a sarcastic snooty voice

As a man had to pause on his bike.

We held him up for all of ten seconds,

Such rudeness I do not like!

The very existence of towpaths

Was for barges and boats, I’m sure,

Yet people like this curt cyclist

Seem to forget what they are for.

And guess who pays for the usage?

Well, not the cyclists, please note,

It’s included in the river licence

So paid for by those with a boat.

Sign by the river in our village says

Pedestrians have priority,

No reference of boaters whatsoever.

We’re the unmentioned minority.

Often it’s me that’s the pedestrian

So I should be the one with the say,

But when a cyclist comes at you,

You tend to step out of the way.

When zooming silently up behind me,

They give me quite a fright,

Meant to slow down and ring their bell

But there’s only some that might.

A few smile and thank me nicely,

And I like to live and let live,

But most assume right of way what

Ever message that sign may give.

So what priority is there?

I can’t be the only clown,

It’s walkers that give way to cyclists

To save from being mowed down!

Hello Lynn
I am at various times a walker (some say that's a typo!), a cyclist and a motorist, and there is no question which is the best way to lose your life!

ah the delight of cyclists on our country lanes, the hiss of a snake at my horse's heels as Martian headed beasts whizz pass with inches to spare, with no advance proclamation of their passing, or the mob of wheels hurtling head down round the corner (on the wrong side of the road) admiring nothing but the blackness of the tarmac, blind to the blossom on the hedgerows. I dread the day it is the silence of the electric car that we curse instead.

Ha ha, MC, please feel free to write whatever kind of riposte you like!

I guess there are idiots of all sorts out there!

Thank you Cynthia. Yes, it was one of those soundless Olympic speedsters that prompted this poem!

As a lifelong cyclist - country, coast and central London (I dare you to be THERE on a bike!!), I sympathise with the writer's unwanted experiences with those pedestrians on
wheels (NO cyclists, they!) met over the years.
But I have also met people on foot who should
have a minder when out in public. Have you seen the particular variety who stands alone by
a pedestrian crossing & steps blithely out into
the road to stop the only car within a hundred yards?! Or who wanders along completely oblivious to anyone or anything around him/her?
I'm thinking of writing a riposte to put the
genuine cyclist's POV...so there!!

We have the same problem on the Bridgewater Canal in Sale. Our signs do say: Walkers and Cyclists and, as walkers, we are also willing to share the towpath. But the discourtesy of some bikers beggars belief - especially the soundless Olympic speedsters who never ring a bell and can almost give you a heart attack. I have delicious fantasies of dumping them headfirst into the canal, preferably without getting myself killed in the process. Good subject, Lynn. Congrats.
