Trev's Texas Tour 2012 (Carlsbad to Lamesa)
15.4.12
Image: The characteristic deep brown soil of Lamesa
63) Car fuelled and almost stowed, soon I’ll hit the road
To Lamesa, no more striving, a rest from all the driving
And I’ve a hunch I’ll be at Connie’s for lunch
64) Down the road stop for a snack, then back on track
Later to find I’d left New Mexico behind
On a Texas road I go, country music on the radio
Sound of ringing guitar inside my car
Central time says 20 to 11, like drivin’ through a musical heaven
65) Getting nearer Lamesa town, familiar soil deeply brown
Up ahead what can be seen, something like a smoke screen
No, really it’s just, the wind blowing up the dust
Across the road swirling, like a dervish whirling
Approaching like an enveloping fog, the whole road it seems to hog
The edge of the field and if, you didn’t know you’d swear it was a cliff
Slowly eerily getting nearer
Is there something eerily unseen like a horror movie scene?
Now I’m through, the roads clearer
So much for imagination, now on to my destination
66) After all the miles we met with smiles
Coffee then on the computer I went, e mails read, replies sent
Then help with a chore down to the local store
Almost caught hopping when a guy mistook ours for his shopping
He was taken aback, said “sorry” and gave it back
I said it was a pick up trick a sure winner
Get you to make conversation then invite you to dinner.
67) Washing done, ironing completed, unwanted e mails deleted
Photos down loaded to USB somebody else might want to see
Now sat on the porch in the ol’ rockin’ chair
Enjoyin’ a coke in the cool evenin’ air
Reflect on the day, I’ve come a long way
And tomorrow to KPET I’ll go to do my first American radio show
