RICHIE BENAUD - on his retirement to Australia

One of the great cricketers and cricket commentators, his decision to retire from UK cricket

commentary was a sad occasion for all who love the game - and his inimitable "delivery".

This short tribute was written at the time.

...............................................................................................................................................

With a tone as calm and measured

As his run up to the crease,

His tenure has been treasured

But we only held the lease.

All good things must end they say

And as we say goodbye

Let us emulate the man,

No tear (no fear!), no sigh.

Richie Benaud - gentleman,

For all that you have brought,

THANKS - and do come back again...

And make it soon, old sport!

Thanks JC. I used to work now and then at Lords here in London and he would pass by occasionally, always recognised and always
polite.

Just the right tone, MC. A doughty competitor but true gentleman. I just about recollect memories of him from those days when cricket seemed to produce a gentler breed (Cowdrey, Dexter, Worrell). Benaud is a reminder to every sportsman today that being competitive and being a sport aren't mutually exclusive.
