"To Thine Own Self"

“To Thine Own Self”

(Hamlet: Shakespeare)

No offence to the Bard,

But I found it quite hard

When composing a sonnet

My face had a frown on it….

His iambic pentameter

Could not have been sweeter –

Mine should have been neater….

His verse flowed like sweet wine,

Every word quite divine –

Rough and ready, was mine!

But discouraged I’m not:

What small talent I’ve got –

Yes, I know, not a lot! –

Shall be channelled into

Writing, best I can do –

In my own fashion, too…..

To mine own self be true

Wrote this today following our Stockport Write Outit was actually a good challenge attempting to writhe above was written tongue-in-cheekhoweverI stand by the words therein!

Dorinda, great to see your work up here, prompted by what John seems to have turned from a Write Out Loud night, to the superb Stockport Sonnet Supporters Society; or something. All those pent amateurs. Excellent. And, good for you: you say what you want to say. What use is Shakespeare? He's been dead too long to be of interest to anyone now.

I wrote this today following our Stockport Write Out Loud last night, which was as ever a great evening. It was actually a challenge attempting to write a sonnet; however, I shall stand by the words of my poem and in future do as best I can with what I have!
Hope you enjoy reading this........Dorinda
