Wheels of Fortune

A famous Tory politician
Once said some things we didn’t like
He told us if we wanted success
Then we should all get on our bike

I’m not one to say I told you so
And Norman Tebbit’s not my mate
But now his words are making sense
Even if it’s a little bit late

We laughed at his pathetic words
We didn’t give them any chance
And now that fella Wiggins
Has gone and won the Tour De France

British cyclists at the Olympics
Our winners all be-medalled
Could it be our Norman Tebbit
That inspired the way they pedalled

Now when it comes to Winter games
Our teams are not so great
How can we improve them?
That will be the great debate

I can imagine the Tory Leaders now
Trying to think up another wheeze
How about telling the unemployed
To get out and about - on their Ski’s

WOL Olympic Competition.

I enjoyed both your poems. More please. Take care, Tony.

I enjoyed the humour in this. There should be a sport out there that you can only play in pissing rain - then we'd excel in it and win all the medals. Winter sports demand snow and the wealthy background to be able to afford skiing lessons - much like dressage, I suppose :)

Yes Tommy - it is often misquoted and I think that it will only ever be remembered as the "Get on your bike" speech.

To be strictly correct Tebbit said his DAD had done just that when he looked for a job. Tommy

It was published in The Liverpool Echo newspaper tonight - and I sent it to the Daily Mail as well

Enjoyed, Ian.
Especially the be-medalled/pedalled rhyme.
