ITT STEREO 45 AND 33 rpm, OR WHY AM I SPEAKING TO MY RECORD PLAYER?
ITT STEREO 45 AND 33 rpm,
OR ‘WHY AM I SPEAKING TO MY RECORD PLAYER?’
It’s time to put you on the shelf
But I do want to hear you again,
Reminding me of times and places
Long gone faces of yesteryear,
Tragically hip to the core
I find I need you more, more, and more.
But my iPod is calling me to a relationship
Of convenience!
Seducing me with its beautiful interface
And smooth curves,
And generally looking after me better
Than you ever could,
That’s not to say that you didn’t enrich my life!
It’s just time to move on,
I’ll stay in touch, but we will
Spend less time together,
But it’s for the best!
I know when you’re gone
I’ll only want you back again,
But I have packed your case
And I won’t need these records anymore?
Well not for a while anyway!
Let’s just see how it goes.
Why am I speaking to my record player? Paul Maxey.

I haven't an Ipod but I DO have an old Pye "Black Box" record player with a BSR Monarch autochanger. And if you remember that piece of Hi-Fi, your words carry even more resonance. It still has its place playing some venerable old 78s - with a lovely mechanical clanging as the disc drops down the spindle and the pick-up whirs across to drop with a satisfying clunk on the lead-in groove. Such basic delights still have (for me) their place in this world of "invisible" electronic invitations to take part. And stacking up a pile of old pop 45s from the golden days of the hit parade when every week saw a new list of good songs...well, that's even more fun....!!!
