Phases of phrases

entry picture

At the end of the day

when all's said and done

when the fat lady sings

what will be will be

to be fair, to be fair, even if it's not

let's suck it and see, let's suck it and see, let's suck it and see.....

It's sucking me in

the black hole of language

Can't control my tongue

since I was young

been

talking, even thinking in phrases

that come and go in phases

How free is my mind, how loose is my tongue

how useless is resistance

to the linguistic goose-step

distanced from originality

eradicating the radical

Obey the

new rules

say the new thing

ditch the old phrases

they’ve been phased out

erased out

not all the rage

not good on the page

unhip to the jive

If you’re likin’ it

if you’re lovin’ it

if you’re stayin’ alive

don't slip, keep in step

pep things up

pepper your speech

with a sprinkling of jargon

before you're too far gone

before it sucks you in

the black hole of language

The amazing phases of phrases

Whatever happened to

sayings like ... like ...

it's no good

I can't retrieve them, those ancient phrases

they're

over the event horizon

they're in some parallel dimension

like the people who said them

all dead, fled, sped,

brown bread

fed to the black swans

on the black lake

in the black hole of language

Good Lord, heavens above

I'm

through the wormhole, David Frost-style

By Jove

I'm literally by Jove

and he's coming out with things

I haven't heard in years

Cor blimey, coo, even phew, strike a light

For Pete's sake, it's nice to break

the chain of change

the pain of change

Turn back the pages

returning to turns of phrases

before they went to blazes

before they were swallowed by new faces

and followed on to faeces

Before the end of their phases

What a great flow from old to new to old again.

Word play, familiar phrases, rhyming slag, tradition, it's such a perculiarly British thing !!
