So Amazing
So Amazing
I am amazed
At the skill of the horseman
As he charges down the beach
On his white henna-maned, and tailed
Wind-swepped horse.
I am more impressed,
Than annoyed
At the many conversationalists
That I meet, fast talking, parallel walking
And as quick as they are slow.
I am transported
By the fishermen
As they work anciently with white nets,
Muscles and brightly fadding
Wooden-bodied boats.
I am dazzled
By the women
Carrying various loads
On clothe nests on their heads
Upright, steady and never faultering
I am reminded
About myself
When I see the children
Holding hands and looking into their eyes
I see curiosity
I am spirited
By their spirit
Which makes an impossible country
Ebb and flow with the tide of the Atlantic
And the Gambia River
I am dissappointed
With government and aspirations
The first steering slow change
And the second undermining the
Growth of a great country
I see history
In Serrocunda
Senagambia, Barra, Tanjeh
Brufut, Banjul and mostly
On James Island
I see the ease
With which it’s possible to forget
And deny responsibility
So I seek strength to support
The right people to do the right thing

Hi Len, thanx for your email with this poem, really enjoyed it. I only spent a week there but this took me back, you've created a great picture of the Gambia, with its highs and lows, but great spirit in its people, best wishes Jeff
