The Beat is Back: poetry mixes it with jazz at Marsden
Write Out Loud, now an established poetry presence at Marsden's renowned Jazz Festival, this year introduces poetry and music show, The Beat is Back, as well as our ever-popular brunchtime Poetry Jam where YOU are the star. In this historic Pennine village at festival time the air crackles with music (and poetry) at every turn. Join us. The poetry, and much of the music, are free!
Write Out Loud's poetry jam is on Sunday 13 October at the Railway Inn. Make this the year you become a star of the festival. All are welcome to read a poem or two at this ever-popular, free annual event. Your compere is Julian Jordon.
No booking needed, but please arrive early to read. Food/coffee/drinks on sale at the bar.
Later in the day sees the world premiere of The Beat is Back, at 3.50pm at the New Inn. It's a phantasmagoria of poetry and music bringing back the spirit of the Beats (Kerouac, Ginsberg, perhaps a little Rimbaud): Jazzman John Clarke reading What Jazz Can Do, Anjum Malik reading Urdu beat-style poetry, Dave Morgan with musicians Kevin Bates and James Hartnell and The Beat is Back tableau incorporating his paean to Kerouac, Go Jack Go; Julian Jordon reading from Ginsberg’s Howl, the poem that changed America; Ralph Dartford’s quirky verse and David Cooke’s poems on jazz greats.
Before The Beat is Back, go and see the fabulous Gelatos, who are playing at the Liberal Club across the road from, and just before, us. Fantastic, 40s/50s music/songs with an Italian twist. Just make sure you leave in time to get a place at The Beat is Back!

It was a great day: a packed-out Poetry Jam at the Railway, and a feast of beat, jazz and off-the-wall poetry and great music, plus crowded pub and appreciative audience later in the day at the New Inn. Well done Julian for all his hard work and planning, and for his renditions of Rimbaud and Ginsberg's Howl!
