Mr Martlew

would you mind

if I sit awhile here

in the shade on my own,

you hushed in your hole,

in the valley of the shadow?

Shall I re-draw life

in the black lines etched above your bones?

Did it hurt?

Were you scared?

Do the stones weigh heavy?

Do they creak beneath the roses

and the green glass gravel?

Did it hurt?

Were you scared?

Were you ready

or not?

Mr Martlew

do you mind

if I sit awhile here?

Trace in the present tense

lichening past.

Walk through the valley of the shadow.

Then furrow in your full name,

husband and son.

Did it hurt?

Were you scared?

Are you there?

Can you see?

We can play I Spy

if you like

(just pretend).

Did it hurt?

Were you scared?

Were you ready

or not?

Mr Martlew

do you mind

if I sit awhile here

all alone, with your dust

and your teeth and your bones?

Through the valley of the shadow.

Did it hurt?

Thou art

Did they catch you

with me.

Did they kill you in the end?

We can play hide and seek

if you like

(just pretend).

Did it hurt?

Were you scared?

Were you ready

or not?

This really works for me Laura.
There is a real innocence and spiritual warmth to this. Like ear-wigging a very private conversation. I hope you can sense what I mean.
Lovely.

Hey many thanks folks!

You nailed it Ian (shurrup with the W you!) - dark/anti-nursery rhyme is the tone I ended up going for :)

Nah - feel free to write something if it's in you! Be really interesting to see your take on it. I've walked around that very same graveyard sooo many times as a lonely kid, and would genuinely sit and 'talk' (in my head - just pretend) to the dead people.

hey Laura.W ;-)
really interesting and vividly haunting piece this chuck. The repetitions work very well and give it a bleak/dark anti-nursery rhyme element that both chills and fascinates in equal measure. I was also going to do summat with that photo of Rich's - but won't now because this piece of yours nails the mood and beauty of the photo and does it real justice - another good un m'dear
