Let's speak up for openness, acceptance, tolerance - freedom of expression is at the heart of democracy

entry picture

Freedom of expression is at the heart of democracy. Write Out Loud’s raison d’être is helping and encouraging people to find their voice and share their words with each other in an open, accepting, tolerant atmosphere, regardless of religion, race, gender, physical ability or social circumstances. We respect the rights of those of all religions to practise their faith freely, without imposing their beliefs on others, and of those of no religion to hold to their own views. The Write Out Loud team, and I am sure most if not all of our members and visitors, stand alongside the cartoonists and writers of Charlie Hebdo at this appalling time. We utterly condemn what has been perpetrated in France, and urge all who value freedom of expression to do the same.

The force-feeding of religious belief into
infant minds should be prohibited by law, with
a proviso of the subject being taught only when
it becomes a subject for question and discussion
by minds old/aware enough to take an intelligent
interest - and form their own opinions free
from mental indoctrination. Thereafter, "belief"
can become a personal choice that can associate
with those of like mind without posing a threat
to others of a different persuasion.

GS - point taken about the profiteering that
accompanies this publishing endeavour.
Freedom is indeed a multi-faceted thing.

If a person has no sense of humour about life then that person must endure a pitiful existence. Then again, no pity for the pitiless!

These French-born killers seem not to have been
in agreement with the words attributed to Voltaire over two centuries ago.
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend
to the death your right to say it".
Or perhaps they missed them during their education!
Whatever - we know why France will always
react vigorously against such murderous attacks
on its hard-won system of society.

How right you are Julian.

We have to absorb all these terrible atrocities without violent reaction, and continue patiently setting an example to this minority, of pathetic, brain washed primitives. What civilization is all about.

All religion without exception is established on pasts to be ashamed of, unfortunately it will take many years to educate and coax these misguided, tunnel visioned misfits away from their medieval philosophy.
