The Gallipoli Fallen
The Gallipoli Fallen
From Perth to Auckland came the merry brave
Fighting for King and Empire and the motherland to save
The Anzac was led with zeal and might
Churchill's men prepared to fight the merry fight
To the Dardanelles the men were led ashore
To open a supply route to Russia, so ill-equipped and poor
Churchill's plan to obliterate the Ottomans from the war
The sick man of Europe, sure the Turks would fall
But Pasha's men were dug in to do battle
While ships of brave young Anzacs fell under the machine gun rattle
Slave to the cannon burst, they were trapped openly on the rocks
Slaughtered in their thousands, to graves of sand they flocked
Pouring in men and machine to make the final push
Churchills gallant gladiators into a death trap they were rushed
Aussies and Kiwis dragged away from distant lands
To die in pitiless droves, due to over-optimistic plans
Seeing the campaign as futile, the mission was aborted
Due to the valour of the Turks, defeat was soon fraughted
Churchill at the heart of it, was unceremoniously sacked
For the fallen and the lame, remember the humble Anzac

One of WW1's greatest military tragedies far away from
the trenches of the Western Front. The numbers of
casualties suffered by the Anzacs reverberates to this
day in the Southern Hemisphere. Churchill's political
career took a dive and he joined up and served at the
Front, enjoying the respect of his men. I recall that he
felt let down by the attitudes and conduct of the
commanders in overall charge at the scene of this
disaster: tardy and indecisive...contributing to its
failure. But the buck stopped with him. Just as well he
returned to politics and perhaps the experience served
him well to keep the Third Reich from the door in WW2.
