Martin Figura to judge new award for older poets

A new poetry award has been launched, for first collections by poets over the age of 40. The initiative has come from Judi Sutherland of The Stare’s Nest poetry website, who says of the Fledgling award, covering full collections and pamphlets: “Don’t you hate it that the young get all the chances? That there are so many poetry awards for people under 18, under 25, under 30? What if you spent the first part of your life not writing poetry but gathering material for poems that only came later, when you had a bit more time to reflect?” Martin Figura, pictured, will judge the 10 shortlisted titles, and the deadline is 15 May. The collection must have been published in 2014-15. More details

What if you spent the first half of your life raising three kids and working jobs to finance their fashion habits?
