Andrew McMillan is one of this year’s five Eric Gregory award winners, it was announced this week. The awards are given annually to young poets. Other winners this year are Sam Buchan-Watts, Dom Bury, Jen Campbell, and Alex MacDonald. Each author receives £4,500, and the prizes were presented by John Agard on behalf of the Society of Authors at the Army and Navy Club in London on Tuesday 21 June. This year’s judges were Moniza Alvi, John Greening, Helen Ivory, Daljit Nagra, Carol Rumans and Ahren Warner. Last year Andrew McMillan won the £10,000 Guardian first book award, and the Fenton Aldeburgh first collection prize. The Gregory awards were founded in 1960 by the late Dr Eric Gregory for the encouragement of young poets under 30.
