Eater Of Worlds

Eater Of Worlds

Zanni

Sits in front of a mirror

Smears his face with paint

His sad eyes

Come alive

With rings of black

And the white muzzle

Cracks when he smiles

Auguste

Paints a teardrop on his cheek

And swigs

From a bottle

Of broken dreams

The hot liquid

Burns his cackling throat

And warms his cold, cold heart

Harlequinade

Transforms

Into Joey

Anarchist

Joker and fool

Never look in his eyes

For they are dead

The colour of crow’s wings

Estragon, Vladimir

Wait in the wings

Buster and Stanley

And Oliver too

In Blackpool

A young child

Nervously laughs

at dough faced Charlie

Bozo

Child of Grimaldi

Father of Pennywise

Who Stephen inks

When he sits alone

And howls at the moon

Looking for inspiration

in Coulrophobes

Adam

Picks up a hammer

And stands in the woods

Gestures for children

To come hither and join him

Laughter exchanged

For something much darker

In these more civilised times

Superbly conceived with all the grand guignol details and as Stu says comes right up to date with the less subtle stage craft of these idiots.
I'm just about to put my own take into a poem on the site -beware !!

loved this ian. im having to escort my housemate to the shop and back currently as he is terrified of clowns. frankly, if i see one of the pricks, i will knock shades out of him.

i feel your poem is slightly more eloquent.

sorry i couldnt come to pieland this time, i had completely forgot it was my daughters birthday that weekend (classy!)

edit - the poem itself is fab. i love the way you have linked the old noble tradition of clowning to the crass, modern affair we currently have using the old fashioned names and descriptions. clever.

tears of a clown indeed.
