JUST ANOTHER DAY
football grounds are deserted
libraries tightly shut
half light subsists
sadness stuck in a rut
but McDonalds comes to the rescue
it's just another day.
Clinics for the borderline insane
are holding open days again
swollen rivers are all in a rush
seeking a reasonable explanation for nature
domestic walls are checked for flecks of blood
its just another day.
The air hums with emergency calls
someone chokes, someone falls
the river has finally freed a trolley
a sunset hides its face in shame
its just another day.
Car lights are switched on early
a phone call comes in from Mumbai
with the threat of eastern promise
curtains draw over UPVC
standards are slipping the F word again
followed by gales of laughter
tearing through carehome screens
to no avail
its ok with the BBC
and there is no other way.
Life goes on and it's not a rehearsal
Liz Fraser has auctioned her sweater
life is tough when you've had enough
a train from the twilight terminus
awaits another reversal
it's just another day.
Loss of bladder control coming on
but there is an advert for that
so all is not yet lost
on just another day.

David, I am tainting you with age I fear. In this netherworld I have often performed with scant results. But there is always the tea I suppose. Glad you like the tone. I have rightfully been accused of being nihilistic by others. The danger is it may always fail to please.
Colin , nicely spotted. Lucky to get a rhyme out of that line. I was aware of the song which I think was wonderful by the way. Dropping the It's didn't fool you !
Thanks friends.
