Autumn Leaves
Autumn leaves on winter streets
Nature's garbage littering
The gutters, drains and lanes
Dried and broken fragments
Gathering dust, well past
Their use by date
As autumn finally leaves
Autumn leaves on winter streets
Nature's garbage littering
The gutters, drains and lanes
Dried and broken fragments
Gathering dust, well past
Their use by date
As autumn finally leaves
Yes, 'garbage' is harsh. I still have a thick layer of last Autumn's leaves covering the garden and they are more like a de-constructed duvet for whatever lies beneath than garbage.
Concise pleasing vignette of nature at work set in Man's
modern artificial additions that prevent the intended
absorption and recycling in the soil.
Too often the curious eye perceives
The refuse sweeper binning leaves.
This poem has an interesting mood to it. The garbage, the gutters, dried and broken fragments... so contrasted with the romantic view of falling leaves in autumn, which gives a sense of dissonance. The leaves really do clog everything up don't they? after the beauty of the fall it's what we are left with.
Food for thought. That's just my reading of it though!

lovely writing Hazel although 'garbage' almost seems a little unfair when nature is the great recycler - the composting of it's own litter to bring forth new life. But when it collects in the 'gutters, drains and lanes' of man's creations then I guess it gets viewed as garbage - like a plant growing in the wrong place is a weed - yet nature was here first. Thanks for posting, Colin.

Hi Hazel, loved this, but I don't think "garbage" was a strong enough word. I treat lawns for a living, and leaves are absolutely the bain of my life. They look nice enough on the trees though.
Cheers Kevin
