Nocturne Dance

From one night-time office window,
I zoom my gazing out, out, out,
Searching for other nocturnes,
Dancing the vacuum dance,
Tilting windmills at motion sensors,
That only seem to recognise phantoms,
On Wander Patrol through these elevated moon/june cathedrals,
Built from semi-recyclable materials,
Built to make office-time last and last,
And last..

You cannot get hay fever from a plastic plant,
But that won't stop them from trying,
These triffids of air-con micro-climate-change,
Never change.

The steel-sealed windows reflect, reflect,
Outside windows inside windows,
Like black hole fractal mirror Picasso's.
Stalactite,
Remote.

Guernica profiled,
We identify ourselves with pass cards hanging
from tribal lanyards;
Chakra-opening crystals for the All Seeing Eye.

Sometimes it makes me feel like bungee jumping the vertigo,
Eyes samba tripwire reflections.

Without-word-thoughts I wander,
Wondering;
Nightdream Believer.
Aum.

A couple of cleaners,
Amber-in-aspic,
Are steaming a floor nearer to the sky.

A restaurant bar owner and waitress lock up,
Throwing bottles bagged,
Into a green wheelie skip;
And,
After hugging,
They talk for a few seconds more,
Before separating.
It's just after 2.35am,
Again.

Ultraviolet sheen,
Dead screen savers,
Grey diagonal blinds;
Are those red building lights helipads for flies?
Floors blink black,
Silhouettes windmill,
Electric eels shuffle, click, flutter, ripple.
Oxygen expires plastic plant photosynthesis.
2.36am.
Aum.

glad you liked the Joni song Suki. I think The Hissing of Summer Lawns album was definitely one of her career high points. Hope you find time to listen, it's all probably on YouTubious. My other fave is Edith & The Kingpin:

when I was finding the link for this I came across a version by George Michael - how inspired, it's as if parts of this songs were written for him:

the big man arrives
disco dancers greet him
plainclothes cops greet him
big man, small town, fresh lipstick glistening

Hi Ray,

Thank you so much for reading, and your very kind feedback. Always appreciated.

Col,

Thank you too. I just listened to the Joni Mitchell song. Cheers for the link.

Isn't it great when we are introduced to and discover gems that are new to us.What a great song, and the musical arrangement/coda..

I can tell that the more I listen to this song, the more I will discover. Great songs with such lightness of touch in both the production and arrangement give this song a timeless quality. Thanks so much.

So brilliant, and in spite of all the great comments I am at a loss to contribute any new facets Suki. I do love "tribal lanyards" just for one, but the images just leap out and hang together into a dark silk dreamscape.

Nothing could be better and i'm sure we all go back suitably humbled.

Hi all,

What can I say - thanks so much for taking the time to read and leave your feedback - really appreciated.

Col,

I love the lines of the Joni Mitchell lyric:
A helicopter lands on a Pan Am roof/
Like a dragonfly on a tomb..

Which song is this. I would love to listen to it. I'm not too familiar with her music.

David,

This was partly inspired by where I work: lots of glass office buildings, with a few cafes. An oddly peaceful atmosphere (sometimes), other times quietly menacing/deceptive..

Night is also a great time for both reading and writing poetry - when our minds go a little nuts, and our biorhythms/circadian rhythms get all tangled, trip wired..

Stu,

You're really kind. I don't always have confidence, but just go with it - see what happens, and suspend disbelief; it's the only way..

Paul,

Thank you too. Always appreciate your feedback. I know you must still be especially busy settling back in and all..

Thanks all.

Suki, a wonderfully imaginative poem that stands up well to re-reading. Quite brilliant observations and descriptive writing.

I am somewhat lost for words - this is so staggeringly brilliant. It baffles me how you find so many amazing word combos in every poem you post yet each one is so very different and there is rarely a hint of overlap. What I love about your writing is that I sense your influences percolating through unabashed. I hope that comes across as a compliment as your writing is also quite unique.

It also triggers so much in the readers own personal catalogue of influence - little snippets that have lingered in ones imagination. It's like you have provided the stem from which our imagination can branch off in many different directions. This for me was one of the things that came to mind, from Joni Mitchell:

He opens up his suitcase
In the continental suite
And people twenty stories down
Colored currents in the street
A helicopter lands on the Pan Am roof
Like a dragonfly on a tomb
And business men in button downs
Press into conference rooms
Battalions of paper-minded males
Talking commodities and sales
While at home their paper wives
And paper kids
Paper the walls to keep their gut reactions hid

there is a bravery in the way you write which i always enjoy. certain lines at first seem like nonsense before revealing themselves to be both clever and beautifully phrased. i dont really think i have read many poems like the ones you post and i think thats because you have the utmost confidence in your writing. and so you should.

edit - this really is fucking brilliant.
