Love Isn't....

   LOVE ISN'T......

Love isn't...a dozen red roses and a box of Thornton's,

Wrapped by a spotty teenager in a hurry to finish work....

  Love isn't.

Love isn't...a table for two in a dimly lit restaurant,

Staring gormlessly at each other over the top of cheap red

  candle-sticks....

  Love isn't.

Love isn't...a large soppy card saying "I love you forever",

And a £3.99 bottle of cava followed by the ripping open of a

  purple ribbed condom,

  Love isn't.

Love isn't...a night at the movies,

  Watching a mindless,heartless rom-com,

And the sharing of a bucket of unsalted popcorn,

  Love isn't.

  Love isn't

A night curled up on the sofa,

Bathed in the light of the telly,

  Love isn't

Love isn't... a strawberry scented bubble bath,

Surrounded by the light of flickering tea-lights,

  Bought in bulk from Ikea,

  Love isn't.

  Love is...

A bit of peace without constant nagging...

And not having to live up to unrealistic demands...

  And too-high expectations,

  Love is

  Love is...

A cup-a-soup with crispy croutons eaten in silence,

And watching my favourite programme without being told,

  "Turn this crap off!"

  Love is

  Love is...

Enjoying each other's company without stressing over things

  that don't matter,

  Spending time together,

  With no demands,

  No dictatorship,

  Love is

  Love is...

  Not worrying about money,

  Or work,

  And living for the moment,

Despite the bastard credit crunch looming,

  Love is

  Love is...Co-operation,

  Love is...Compromise,

  Love is...Companionship

  That's what love is...

  Love is...Sharing,

  Love is...Showing,

  Love is...Shielding

  That's what love is

  That's what love is

Hi John,

Interesting - the predominance of female respondents on this poem . . . (In my experience it's best to ask what the female ideal of love is . . . and then simply agree; much less hassle.)

Isobel - I'm presuming you're referring to the hue of your taps? But maybe not; you do seem to enjoy taking the p**s! :-)

Regards,
A.E.

Love this one John. You are talking about what is left once all the fluff of romance has gone, the essential core of a successful long term relationship. Too few of us manage to find this kind of love.
Janet - how lucky are you - I gave up bathing a long time ago - I have to settle for showers - and not even golden ones....

I enjoyed your take on love...
Nice to see it from a man's point of view,
BUT...
I NEED LOTS OF ROMANCE ; )

Love might be all this for you John, {and Im not refuting its a huge part,} but we ladies do like a bit of romance too, and we feel cheated when we are deprived of it!! So be warned!!!!!

Common sense is hard to maintain against the bombardment of commercial 'love icons'. Well put, encouraging your readers to consider the really important things about loving, but ... perhaps along with some of the other 'romantic' trappings which women do appreciate. It's a good poem.

Thanks for the comment Janet! Perhaps my idea of a "Luxury" bubble bath is a bit old-hat then!Haha

Spoken like a true man!
Seriously though Jon boy, there's so many truths and sadnesses too in this poem for the way life and love is, or isn't as you perceive love to be..

This is a great poem and i love it.

ps. My bath has lavender, patchouli and ylang-ylang in it please. Strawberries belong in a dish with cream. :-)
