THE POETRY JUDGE

I'd love to be a poetry judge,

Know what I mean...wink wink nudge nudge!

Chosen for my poetical nous -

To indulge in wordy "pick and choose".

It seems that adding a uni degree

Would serve to see the likes of me

Complete a literary course or two

To hold forth on the likes of you,

And what you write and even how

You form your lines in lonely plough.

Be warned I may not have the time

To determine quality stuff in rhyme,

For anyone writing these days knows

That the thing that pleases us is prose,

Of any type and however obscure

Will be welcomed like amour's allure!

Parading for admiring eyes

To win each competition's prize.

I trust my words you'll not misjudge -

Know what I mean...wink wink nudge nudge!

Thanks for the comments - one and all!
I was tempted to include the extra couplet:
"I seriously suspect there's truth in the rumour
That poetry prizes aren't awarded for humour". ?

I`m in the process of re-reading Jonathan Raban`s `The Society of the poem` (so I couldn`t really comment on poetry judges at the moment without swearing).

Thank goodness the universities stlll have to teach the long-term academically tried `Canon` for some of the newer stuff to fruitlessly knock it`s head against as it learns.

I agree that much of the stuff we admire these days are really very nice short pieces of prose.

do poetry judge's have the equivalent
of a casting couch?
upon which I can willingly, nakedly slouch
I have this sexual way you see
of gaining their favouring me
as long as I leave with the award in my pouch!
