GROSS ENCOUNTER

Once I saw a vampire on a lead

a muzzle around its face

quite harmless it seemed

with its red rimmed eyes

and a sense of time and place.

 

I smiled at its keeper, he smiled back

no words were necessary

the vampire used telepathy

but I didn't find it scary 

 

I knew what it wanted, it knew that I knew

and the sun was low in the sky

so I raised my crucifix just in case

and bade them both goodbye.

Thanks Jennifer; nice to see a new contributor! I'm glad you liked my unusual poem - I wasn't very confident with it, but it seemed to satisfy my warped humour. Interesting how Poe wrote poetry with a certain flavour. David often makes penetrating comments based on his own experiences of life and I do feel there is a validity to it but thanks for making the observation.

Lovely poem. Amusing and imaginative, decidedly Poe-esque. ' I bade them both goodbye' implies his uneasiness. Don't agree with David's 'knowledge of a potental enemy's arsenal.............'. It's a poem, not a military manual.

Good points all, Suki. I always admired Poe as having a streak of black humour in with the depression. Thanks for that. I'm in good company. Sometimes in a poem you think "this makes no sense," as I did with this. A suspension of disbelief can be good for the poetic soul though.

Hi Ray,

This has a slight Poe feel to it; some of his Gothic poetry has a similar vein of humour too. And, like David mentioned, can also be read as "knowing the enemy" ~ at least nick a score draw and walk away relatively unscathed..

Thanks for stopping by David. This is a bit barmy, but then a vampire on a lead is like a tamed thing, no worse than perhaps any ferocious dog controlled. Your point is well taken sir.
