The World Day of Poetry
They would do well to listen to us
as we speak we do so for most people
We articulate our hopes and frustrations
in a world obsessed with cruelty and greed
Poets are the conjurers of words
logophiles at heart, keen to express and impress
The heart of the poet is a deep wellspring
images and reflections are his daily bread
Often alone with pen and paper we sit
to compose the thoughts which assail our very selves
We cry out for the recognition of beauty and love
and seek the common good oft with humour
We share in the anguish of the vulnerable
standing in solidarity with the oppressed
We plead for freedom, compassion and understanding
against dictators, tyrants and the corrupt
We celebrate our lives and the world about us
using the canvas of experience and wonder
Unafraid through the ages we write
we speak, we clamour for justice and expose truth
Our words are legitimate as they are from the soul
not slaves to philosophies or religions
but to sentiment, to the dispossessed and wrongly imprisoned
They will never silence us
