Not Beyond Reason

Reason is the ability to think

to sort - to compare

to qualify - to justify

to judge.

Reason is not the power to mystify

to mortify or control:

it stands aloof of mind games.

But Reason

never masters Feelings

festering in the subconscious

dark and poisonous -

a monster swinging a scythe

ready to slice anything

or anyone

daring to challenge

the precarious balance

of skills for survival.

Emotions unknown

until without warning

they pounce like a demented monkey -

hitting - slamming - breaking

roaring – huffing – puffing -

a private world of fury

made glaringly public.

And those who wait

who suffer such insecurity

watching for triggers

afraid to relax

they see sickness

in relentless cycles.

They find it harder

and harder

with every episode

to feel compassion.

In truth, they begin to wonder:

While peace is impossible

and happiness a dream

is it not beyond reason

to fear for our safety?

Much that is worth reading and repeating.
With reason and logic it can't be denied
The forces of ignorance can be defied. ?

The first stanza drew me in quite effectively.

It's an aside, Cynthia, and certainly not an attempt at being contrary, but your representation of the different facets of our humanity (Reason, Feelings, Emotions) as separate personae which exist in and of themselves reminds me much of some recent reading on neurodiversity.

The term "diversity" with all its modern connotations implies, to me, that we should embrace all of these facets of perception (within ourselves and of others) when evaluating our environment(s).

That's it, Cynthia. Thanks for waking up my brain to communication in complete sentences, at least for a few moments.

Wonderful words Cynthia

and so true - no matter how intelligent we think we may be sometimes we will all have to battle feelings and emotions (I know I have) and reason is very easily cast aside.

If only we could all master reason as easily as some of our emotional qualities....

cheers

While we're on this planet in these times I think we would be be foolish not to fear for our safety - especially from our inner tyrants. A great piece Cynthia.
