Church Law vs Government Law

Church Law vs Government Law

Preamble

This is based on a letter to the paper. 14 billion Catholics commemorate Thomas More and Cardinal Fisher, executed in 1535 by Henry VIII for refusing to put a new law by English politicians above the law of God

The church is saying priests are bound

To keep confessional-silence

Child abuse they can't report

The confessional retains the violence

The law is now about to change

A crime will silence become

Priests they too will need report

As will you, or anyone

The priests do not agree with this

Religious law's supreme

They are prepared to go to jail

To keep holy silence unseen

Priests do claim they represent

Jesus Christ as law

A law humans created

Just as is a government law

To claim an individual can

Uphold a prophet's word

And therefore be above the law

Is really quite absurd

I have no truck with "religious law" - recalling the term
"ecclesiastical law" protecting clergy of the established
church. Henry V111 was an astonishing monarch for
daring to take on the power of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church and winning here in this country in an age
when savage retribution was the norm when vying for
dominance in the name of "religious belief". Superstition
still holds sway in the form of religion even today and it is
essential that the law for all should take precedence over
these self-chosen types of mental conviction. The bottom
line - if you purport to be a "believer" - has to be whether
Christ or the Prophet would condone abuse. Surely not!

I'm not sure how this law could ever be enforced if those both sides of the confession box keep what is said to themselves.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Will the child abuser no longer admit in the confessional for fear of being reported to the police? Or will they confess to avoid hell and damnation? The church has instructed priests not to report child abuse to police despite being against the law. ?
