Reformation

Reformation

Deep in the earth lie the roots of faith

ruined abbeys of crumbled arches remain

Sanctuaries vacant to the air we breathe

each benefice has its claim of thee

Cupolas, domes, towers and steeples

speak out of a faith held by her peoples

Smallest of valleys with bells to ring

the hymns and litanies we used to sing

A faith snatched by salacious needs

vanquished the very essence of her seeds

Severed our link with the Petrine throne

cut adrift in a heretical sea of bone

where the tenets of faith no longer sown

Pilgrimages and sacraments misunderstood

statues, icons and candles burnt as wood

New tenants now the custodians of faith

but caretakers of our folorn Christian face

The tide now slowly turns to the reverse

to establish anew a Church of old

one so quickly and readily sold

Jennifer,

Thank you for this comment. You are right in your assessment that values have vanished and that nothing has replaced religion but the Insitution of the Church itself must accept some responsibility for what has happened. Dare I use the expression.....we need to get back to basics, as that is the only way for some guidance and direction to point the way forward.

Beautiful words, and sadly so true. Religion did give us ethics by which to regulate our lives, more or less strictly according to how committed we were. Now it seems that these ethics have vanished, and the general attitude is 'I want it all . I want it now'. N othing has appeared to replace religion.

Thank you Martin and Heart of Lead,

The poem reflects on the Reformation and its consequences for the Christian Faith in England. The Church of England threw the baby out with the bath water. Spirituality was the first to leave and other aspects of the old Faith followed. A vacuum was created which has never been filled. Hence, cathedrals charging entrance fees, parish churches using their sacred buldings for secular purposes. All this has further diminished the faith. However, the tide will turn as events in the life of most institutions are cyclical in nature. Time will be on the side of Faith

Thank you again for you interesting and valuable comments

There is such a beautiful use of words and turn of phrase here Keith. this puts me in mind of two places
Firstly fountains abbey near Ripon which has little of it left and York minister.
The difference with York minister is it is still standing and still in use.
But with the minister I sense a little of there being almost desecration as there are people selling things inside the place and I can't help feeling it is more a tourist draw than a place of worship. Sorry going off on a tangent there.
This does not detract from making this a lovely poem

Beautiful and ancient. Calm of that which is forgotten. I have felt this in the silence of empty cathedrals. Echoes, just echoes of memory. Well done.
