The Sugar Bowl
THE SUGAR BOWL
On a far away British Colony
there was a gay bar tucked away
up a side street
It enjoyed a modest but dubious reputation
as the owner was known as Sugar
I was intrigued to visit and witness
events there
It was said that Sugar a middle aged man
danced on the tables
to the delight of the clientele
One evening I entered its portals
to find it full of men drinking
A juke box graced the corner
and blared out the latest music
With drink in hand and gently flirting
a voice shrieked " It ´s Sugar"
Dressed in an outrageous costume
with matching accesories
and castanettes in both hands
Sugar leaped onto a nearby table
the juke box was silenced
Dramatic Flamenco music
filled the room
Sugar with castanettes clicking
and feet stamping
Began his extraordinary
dance routine
He dripped with perspiration
as the tempo increased
He wore a serious
expression on his face
Arms outstretched
wearing tight fitting pants
a blouse with leg o mutton sleves
He gave the performance his all
Cheered on by his customers
he swirled and danced with glee
Yells and shouts for more
pervaded the bar
as Sugar bowed and made his final exit
He performed every night of the week
except for Sunday
when he was a voluntary hospital orderly
They said he was gay
I thought so too
