Elegy for Anna
Anna Campbell was her name and Kurdistan
Was the country in which she died on March 15 2018, the Ides of March
She was fighting as part of the all-female
Kurdish Women's Protection Units, the YPG.
She was 26 when she died a long way from Lewes in East Sussex where she was raised.
She was killed by a Turkish airstrike - the Islamist Turks NATO-empowered enemies of the Kurds
Anna had dyed her blonde air black so as to not stand out from her comrades in the YPG
A form of camouflage, maybe, to sustain her
She was the eighth Briton to be killed fighting for the YPG: the first woman volunteer
She wanted to help the weak and dispossessed against the mighty and the cruel
She knew fear but she still fought: she was brave
Anna knew she was in mortal danger from ISIS and the Turks armed by NATO
Knowing how dangerous it was, she volunteered to defend Afrin, a Kurdish city, against the Islamo-Fascist Turks
Her unit opened corridors for civilians to leave and delayed the invaders long enough to save thousands of lives
Anna had more humanity in her little finger than the whole international community
She is an inspiration and a hero: her memory will live as long in the memory
As those who fought Fascism in Spain
As those who gave their lives so that we can be free.
