causing her great embarrassment and mortification.
She would have preferred his love with tonic, not neat.

Definitely better with tonic
I tried to comment on this last night Jennifer but was too tired to see what it was I wanted to say. It's the last line I think. On the surface it almost seems like a throwaway metaphor, but in the light of day (after some much needed sleep) I can see how layered it is.
