The Squirrel Ripple

entry picture

In celebration of nature....

The Squirrel Ripple

Out in the park,

Relishing signs of spring,

I chanced upon a wonderful thing,

Backbone flexing,

Nose twitching,

Brush bristling,

I watched, wishing I too,

Could do

The squirrel ripple.

Across a flint grey path,

Camouflage in place,

Keeping a low profile

From the rat race.

Bright eyes right,

Bright eyes left,

Heading for the tree,

I felt bereft.

Undulating up the trunk,

I bend and flex in sympathy,

Desperate to be

Doing the squirrel ripple,

Along the branches of a tree.

And as I lie in bed that night,

My mind plays tricks on me,

As I toss and turn

Flex and bend,

Imagining I am at the end,

Of a heavy workout rodent style,

Feel I’ve rippled a million miles!

Don't think you can stroke a lovely squirrel. They have a nasty bite. Maybe they take your pinkie for a tasty morsel.....

I love this! It is so clever the way you recreate the squirrel’s movement and have fun with rhythm and rhyme.

I have to say that squirrels are one thing I adore most about home. Through pure chance, I once happened to see one standing up, arms in the air, in defense against a swooping hawk. His face seemed to scream in defiance. That's the way I'll always remember it anyhow--I was in love.

..to ripple a million miles--what a thought )
