SMILE CVN'T ! WHY CVN'T ?

(This piece was inspired by eccentric Sydney 75yr-old sandwich-board wearer Danny Lim who was arrested, handcuffed and fined $500 for displaying a sign “SMILE CVN'T ! WHY CVN'T ?” after a single phone complaint. He appeared in court with his chihuahua-pomeranian Smarty. The magistrate was highly critical of the arresting officers and said the law was concerned with what would offend the “hypothetical reasonable person”. The $500 fine was overturned.)

Eccentrics should be treasured

And not chained up, cut down

We need them to inspire us

To look up, not on ground

They may be unconventional

And make us squirm a bit

But hey? What is life all about?

Get off shelf where you sit

"As long as we allow convention to govern us

we will never make progress" (DM)

Maybe just for a moment

Get off your shelf, allow

An inner eccentricity

Come out, be shown (then bow)

You may like it.....

And so may others....

You never know.....

Good to know that common sense can prevail in courts occasionally!
But I'm sure the officers saw it as a bit of a "test case" after getting
the complaint and decided to give it a run. This reminds me (no "bad" language connection though) of a similarly notable figure
here in London who was a regular sight in Oxford Street W1 with
his sandwich boards proclaiming the dangers of a protein diet.
I seem to recall that he was a former naval officer named Bill Boakes.
Eccenricity has its place - especially when it makes us THINK or
see life in a different way.

Ref ps. I think that I may have missed some of the finer points made by Don, Adam and Graham. Apologies if I have.

Boris is that slight bit eccentric
My question then is very measured
In UK with 'ccentrics a'plenty
Is Boris-clown, is he so treasured?

Take a trip here to the UK, put all your eccentricities right on display
We'll get you a ticket as soon as today
But your welcome you must not out stay
Unless your here to pay your way

( That's the general vibe going on)

In Australia eccentrics, like tall poppies are ironed flat. In England they are treasured. Why am I living here? ......

I am a silly rhymer
Quirky silly me
I'd rather live in quirkiness
Than dull and murky be

Completely agree with you here Don, it would be so boring if we were all the same. There is something quirky about us all, and expressing it makes life much more colourful
