goddess
One minute she looks like a goddess
shimmering on the brink
glowing with a secret.
People stop her in the street
“You look so beautiful” they say
amazed indeed at such translucent loveliness.
A moment passes and a thought.
Suddenly faded, who is she now?
They don’t recognise her anymore.
Like a plane crashing a thousand feet
in one second
it is all gone.
The joy, the hope, the loveliness.
Reality bites down with bloody teeth.
The truth comes up like a missile from the deep.
Rips her apart.
Spits out her heart.
And all that’s left
is drink,
and sleep.

Hi Graham - I guess I was hoping for a violent and dramatic contrast rather than coarse, but I am sure you have a point. I know you have a very sensitive ear for language - I remember you didn't like my microscope in another poem. Do appreciate you taking the time to think about it. xx And thanks Liam. xx
